The Disney-Pixar film “Cars” (2006) featured a world inhabited solely by anthropomorphic cars. The film proved moderately popular at the box office but spawned a mass of merchandising related to the film from both official and Chinese knock-off sources. Before Cars 2 was released in 2011, it was announced that the first film had generated $10 billion in global merchandise sales since 2006 (the first two Cars films have only accrued slightly over $1 billion in box office revenue worldwide). I am not interested in collecting cars from the film per se, I’m not looking for a Lightning McQueen or a Mater Tow Truck, but I have picked up a few of these models because the prices were reasonable and I was interested in the cars they were derived from. Brent Mustangburger, a sports commentator, in Cars 2 clearly based on a 1964 Ford Mustang, the scale of the model is around 1:48. I also have two smaller models one based on a Zaporozhets, which whilst including a commentator mike didn’t even feature in any of the films and Sterling from Cars 3 based on a BMW CS Vintage Concept.
Lightning McQueen the hero of the Cars movies isn’t based on a single car but is a mix of Chevy Corvette, Ford GT, Lola and possibly even a bit of Porsche 911.
